Mothering Sunday in the UK has a much richer history and a religious connection, which Mother’s Day in the United States doesn’t have. Both are times when mothers are celebrated and treated to Mothers Day flowers, gifts or restaurant meals. As with Mother’s Day in the United States, this holiday in the UK has become more commercialized. Mothering Sunday is not always the easiest holiday to keep track of. Rather than being on the same date every year, it changes each time. This holiday is tied to the month of Lent and so you will need to know when Lent begins in order to figure out when Mother’s Day will be. The fourth Sunday of the month of Lent is when this holiday is celebrated, and the Mother’s Day date falls halfway between Good Friday and Shrove Tuesday. The history of Mothering Sunday involves both the Catholic Church and the Church of England. As it is a religious holiday that has become secularized over the years, knowing the history of Mothers Day from the viewpoint of the UK can be very useful. In the 1600’s, children were sent away from home around the age of ten to either become domestic servants or to have an apprenticeship in a certain field. Their Mother church would be the church where they were baptized at a very young age. The other religious connection for this holiday is through the Virgin Mary, the mother of Christ. Thus, once a year these young children were allowed to return home to their mother church and to visit with their own mothers and families. Nowadays, Mothering Sunday has kept a few of these traditions alive, but dropped many of the old ones. It is a day when children reconnect with their families if they live far away, and often a trip to church is involved. Some people still make traditional Simnel cakes in honor of the occasion, and they use this day as the chance to refresh themselves after fasting during Lent. Others believe a happy Mother’s Day begins and ends with flowers and a trip out to a restaurant. Commercialization and secularism have both had an effect upon Mothering Sunday in the UK. Even though it began as a religious holiday, it has quickly become a day to celebrate mothers by presenting flowers for mothers, gifts, sweets or dining out in a fancy restaurant. In some parts of the UK the holiday is still a religious one and the history is preserved through the Church. In such places, it is common to have flowers given out to all the mothers sitting in pews during the church service.
